Voipfuture and AWS showcase AI/ML for communication service providers

Hamburg, Germany – June 29th 2021

Voipfuture Qrystal and AWS Lookout delivered convincing results in a first joint trial
Showcase will be demonstrated at MWC Barcelona 2021

Voipfuture and Amazon Web Services (AWS) enable Communication Service Providers to benefit from artificial intelligence (AI) and machine-learning (ML) for 5G voice services in the AWS cloud. Qrystal’s deep data on voice service performance and Amazon Lookout proved to make a perfect match. The demonstrator showed how quickly anomalies and their root causes can be found. This illustrates the potential of automated service management based on AI/ML models trained with accurate and reliable data.

Voipfuture Qrystal delivers accurate service performance and user experience data to all CSP stakeholders

  • Deep analysis of SIP and RTP traffic, with high temporal detail and automatic detection of call drops, silent calls and many other impairments, for effective and efficient operations,
  • Aggregate data on trunks, routes, eNBs, interconnections and other relevant entities enabling trending, alarming and benchmarking for performance optimization teams,
  • Unique key performance indicators, e.g. for in-call user experience, used by sales/marketing teams to attract and retain customers, e.g. through self-service portals

This data forms the foundation for service automation based on AI/ML.

Amazon Lookout for Metrics uses machine learning (ML) to automatically detect and diagnose anomalies (i.e. outliers from the norm) in business and operational data. Lookout makes it easy to diagnose detected anomalies related to the same event and sending an alert that includes a summary of the potential root cause. It also ranks anomalies in order of severity so that you can prioritize your attention to what matters the most to your business.

Having worked closely together with the AWS Telco Network Transformation team Dr. Michael Wallbaum, Director Product Marketing at Voipfuture says: “I’m really excited to see our data in action. For over a decade operations and performance management teams have successfully used Qrystal for their daily work, but using Qrystal’s data to train AI/ML models is taking it to a whole new level. We soon hope to see first examples of automated service management powered by Qrystal and AWS AI/ML services.”

ETSI publishes TR 103 639 – a new standard for Timeslicing KPIs for RTP

Press Release

Voipfuture: ETSI publishes TR 103 639 – a new standard for Timeslicing KPIs for RTP

Hamburg, Germany – March 24th 2021

ETSI (the European Telecommunications Standards Institute – known for its globally adopted mobile communication standards like UMTS, LTE or TETRA) has published a new technical report on media KPIs for voice communications. The standard released by ETSI in March 18, 2021, sets out a framework for Timeslicing KPIs for RTP based speech transmission.

The technical report (TR) is the result of collaboration between tier-1 telco providers supported by government agencies and industry partners such as Voipfuture.

It is the first standard that defines meaningful service performance KPIs for the media plane, thus complementing the widely used SIP signaling KPIs defined in RFC 6076.

The issues of volatility in speech transmission performance and varying call durations lead to some drawbacks like loss of temporal detail, lack of comparability and problematic aggregation. They are addressed by timeslicing measurement methods, which analyse RTP flow characteristics for fixed time segments.

Such timeslicing methods generate metrics that allow to calculate speech transmission KPIs based on media volume. Annex A of TR 103 639 defines a set of KPIs (i.e. the Good Minute Ratio, GMR) as an industry standard. These KPIs offer a Bird’s Eye View on Voice Service Performance.

Voipfuture study: EVS good enough for VoLTE?

Press Release

Voipfuture study: EVS good enough for VoLTE?

At the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Voipfuture will publish a new whitepaper on the link between call quality and call duration

Hamburg, February 21, 2017. Voipfuture has performed an extensive analysis of the dependency of duration and quality of live calls. The results will be published in a whitepaper to be released at the Mobile World Congress 2017.

The analysis reveals a clear dependency between codec and average call duration as well as network performance and average call duration. Surprisingly, the study finds that levels of packet loss and jitter which are typically observed in Voice over LTE (VoLTE) and Voice over Wifi (VoWifi) networks have a substantial impact on call duration.

The new EVS (Enhanced Voice Services) codec has many features to improve robustness and conceal errors, yet the findings indicate that this may not be sufficient to deal with the adverse conditions in live LTE and Wifi networks.

This implies that the benefits of wideband and superwideband codecs, such as EVS, will only become evident once operators fix the transport quality of their networks. Indeed, the current marketing campaigns promoting EVS-based services are raising user expectations to a level that calls for disappointment. Customer satisfaction will only improve, when VoLTE and VoWifi service providers get their networks under control.

“Our customers make huge investments in VoLTE & VoWiFi to provide excellent voice service quality. But their end customers have many OTT options, such as Skype and Facetime, to make often excellent voice and video calls. Providing a constantly high user experience is the opportunity for mobile operators. However, this requires more than only a good voice codec – it needs an excellent network performance as well,” said Jan Bastian, Voipfuture’s CEO.

The study is based on data from more than 16 million international, domestic and mobile (VoLTE) live calls analyzed by Voipfuture’s Qrystal VoIP monitoring solution. The analysis was made possible by Connect, a new Qrystal solution component that correlates all available call data to create quality-enriched CDRs.

This whitepaper is the first in a series of papers which aims to provide our customers with an in-depth understanding of how to improve the quality of experience.

Voipfuture introduces new KPI system for VoIP media quality

Press Release

Voipfuture introduces new KPI system for VoIP media quality

New white paper: “Why Next-Generation Voice Services Need Next-Generation KPIs”

Hamburg, July 26, 2017. Whereas there are well defined KPIs to assess a network’s SIP signaling performance there is no comparable means to determine media quality. Therefore Voipfuture announces a new KPI system which offers different perspectives on the media quality of a VoIP service.

  • Service Perspective: How do your customers judge your service?
  • Network Perspective: How is the network’s transport quality and how does it influence the user experience?
  • Session Perspective: Do issues stem from persistent issues or isolated incidents?
  • Volume Perspective: How is the overall quality in terms of call minutes?
  • Midpoint Perspective: How is traffic quality in a specific network segment?
  • End-to-End Perspective: How is the overall quality per call?

The KPI system presented in Voipfuture’s new white paper, therefore serves as a vital management tool for telecommunications service providers. It not only explains different quality perspectives but provides KPIs to translate information into action.

Voipfuture technology uses fixed time slicing to create atomic units of media quality. These units are aggregated to different levels, providing data for different use cases. For example, call quality data is essential for customer experience management, but less helpful for root cause analysis. Time slice and session data on the other hand give valuable insights into the overall network and service quality and provide a better high-level overview.

Voipfuture’s KPI hexagon summarizes the most common perspectives on quality of VoIP services:

The Voipfuture media KPI system provides exactly these views on the media plane thereby complementing standard control plane KPIs

  • GMR – Good Minute Ratio
  • GSR – Good Stream Ratio
  • GCR – Good Call Ratio
  • CMR – Critical Minute Ratio
  • CSR – Critical Stream Ratio
  • CCR – Critical Call Ratio

Voipfuture is a premium voice quality analytics vendor providing tools for assessing, aggregating, analyzing, and visualizing voice quality information. Voipfuture products offer a precise view on media and control plane to communication service providers, wholesalers and enterprises.

This whitepaper is the second in a series of papers which aims stimulate discussion on how to measure and improve VoIP quality of experience.

Voipfuture wins award for most innovative VoLTE solution at IMS World Forum 2018

Press Release

Voipfuture wins award for most innovative VoLTE solution at IMS World Forum 2018

Voipfuture celebrates prize win at this year’s IMS World Forum in London

Hamburg, May 3nd, 2018. At the 2018 IMS World Forum, Voipfuture won the Most Innovative VoLTE Solution awards. The IMS World Forum is the only industry event dedicated to IMS and the award is a recognition of Voipfuture’s contribution to VoLTE service assurance.

Operators are investing billions each year into their LTE network infrastructure and VoLTE/VoWifi services. Obviously, the huge investments need to be protected and assured.

Voipfuture Qrystal analyses the control and media plane in full depth. On top of this Qrystal provides dedicated VoLTE/VoWifi support for unique insights into crucial service characteristics directly impacting the user experience.

Qrystal delivers

  • CDRs with LTE/Wifi cell information and quality per cell
  • Signaling and media quality statistics and reports per enodeB and location (the ability to report on MOS and other media plane metrics per cell is exclusive to Qrystal)
  • Qrystal offers a unique visual mapping of S11 bearer events to application level voice quality.

In addition, Qrystal detects the usage of different codec modes, e.g. of AMR-NB, AMR-WB and other multi-mode codecs, during a call. This allows to understand the actual user experience – a wideband codec may not yield high definition audio quality at all times.

Voipfuture’s CEO Jan Bastian said, “The IMS World Forum recognizes outstanding technological developments in our field. It’s a proud moment for Voipfuture to receive this award.”

Dr. Michael Wallbaum, Voipfuture’s Product Marketing Director, stated: “As operators begin to ramp up their VoLTE deployments, it is absolutely essential for them to control voice quality and obtain actionable data about the performance of the service. Qrystal provides all the right reports and data to effectively manage service.”

Qrystal is a passive monitoring system that analyzes SIP and RTP traffic in real-time. Voipfuture’s patented technology uses fixed time slicing to create atomic units of quality. These units are aggregated to different levels, providing accurate quality data to evaluate overall traffic quality as well as for a single call. Service providers can switch focus from trunk quality to carrier quality to destination quality to quality over time just by a click.

Voipfuture is a premium voice quality analytics vendor providing tools for assessing, aggregating, analyzing, and visualizing voice quality information.
