In an exclusive partnership, Rohde & Schwarz and Voipfuture address needs for quality assurance in transition to IP networks

Munich/Hamburg, June 30, 2020 – Rohde & Schwarz and Voipfuture today announced the release of R&S AVQA, a ground-breaking monitoring solution for voice communications in air traffic management (ATM). The transition to IP created new market needs and opportunities, which gave rise to the collaboration between the two companies.

R&S AVQA stands for ATC Voice Quality Assurance and provides air traffic service providers (ANSP) with unique passive monitoring capabilities for ATM communications that covers signaling as well as media and radio transmission performance. Rohde & Schwarz teamed up with Voipfuture to create a unique solution for this important market. The development of R&S AVQA strongly benefited from the experience Voipfuture gained in over 10 years of Voice over IP (VoIP) monitoring in the telecommunications industry.

The solution is already deployed in a few ANSP networks assuring service quality. Typical use cases are monitoring quality and performance KPIs agreed on with WAN providers/carriers or the regular reporting of network quality towards the respective Civil Aviation Authority. An additional benefit is a reduced troubleshooting time by quickly identifying and localizing root causes of IP network problems such as misconfigured routers/switches or faulty fibers.

Today, Voipfuture announces the general availability of Qrystal 6.0 for August 2019. Qrystal is the market-leading quality assurance and analytics system for 4G/5G mobile as well as fixed network VoIP services.

The latest Qrystal release brings numerous enhancements and new capabilities that will simplify operations, optimization and management for VoIP service operators. Qrystal 6.0 is the first voice service analytics system on the market, to offer a unified end-to-end view on call signaling and media transport.

  • The unique Call Flow Diagram feature extends the well-known concept of sequence charts for signaling with rich information on media quality in one integrated view.

Qrystal 6.0 now is the only system worldwide that allows drill-down from the call level down to an individual RTP stream time slice.

The basis for this is a multi-level call correlation technology that joins all SIP and RTP measurements related to a call in one quality-enhanced call detail record (CDR). Voipfuture CDRs feature more than 300 columns with common signaling metrics as well as metrics related to RTP transport performance and user experience. Special VoLTE metrics provide insights into the EPC and radio network performance. New optional CDR-based Qrystal service quality reports give operators an end-to-end view on individual cells, routes and enterprise customers.

It provides CSPs (domestic telcos and international carriers) with the capability to automatically reroute traffic in real-time in case of media quality degradation. The rerouting and route restoration decisions are based on specified CSP policies.

Today, Voipfuture released a new whitepaper titled “The Codec Challenge: EVS forces VoLTE operators to act”. The paper discusses the move of VoLTE service providers to HD Audio codecs and its impact on user expectations and quality assurance.

Voice over IP (VoIP) services may encode voice and other audio signals in different ways, yet conventional narrowband codecs still account for the majority of fixed and mobile telephone calls. However, the codec landscape is quickly changing and, in both domains, new modern codecs are becoming the reference. This development creates pressure on service providers to speed up the transition as customers quickly get used to the superior HD Codec experience.

In addition, providers also need to consider the impact on service quality monitoring, because new codecs, such as AMR-WB and EVS, make it much more difficult to estimate the real user experience. Modern codecs offer several modes and bit rates, which allow to adapt voice transmission to the available channel conditions and bandwidths. Such codec mode changes can occur on a packet-by-packet basis without any indication in the SIP signaling. VoIP monitoring thus needs to be aware of such mode changes, because the user experience strongly depends on the bit rate.

Dr. Michael Wallbaum, Voipfuture Director of Product Marketing, explains: “The bitrates of AMR-WB, used in many mobile networks, range from 23.05 kbit/sec down to 6.6 kbit/sec. The high end will leave most users very satisfied, while the low end leaves nearly all users dissatisfied. This example shows why the bitrate plays such an important role for the user experience and why service providers need to know about different codec modes. Simply saying, ‘oh, we use a wideband codec’ is not enough.”

To provide such information requires a new approach to VoIP monitoring for Voice over LTE. As mentioned above, SIP monitoring must be supplemented by a close look at the media plane and RTP. SIP monitoring without RTP and payload inspection is useless for MOS determination in HD voice services.

This approach is followed by Voipfuture’s unique Qrystal solution. It provides not only real-time information which codec is used but also what bitrate of this codec. As a passive monitoring tool it delivers quality for fixed five second units. Quality data is aggregated to different levels, providing accurate information to evaluate overall traffic quality as well as single calls.

Voipfuture study: EVS good enough for VoLTE?

At the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Voipfuture will publish a new whitepaper on the link between call quality and call duration

Hamburg, February 21, 2017. Voipfuture has performed an extensive analysis of the dependency of duration and quality of live calls. The results will be published in a whitepaper to be released at the Mobile World Congress 2017.

The analysis reveals a clear dependency between codec and average call duration as well as network performance and average call duration. Surprisingly, the study finds that levels of packet loss and jitter which are typically observed in Voice over LTE (VoLTE) and Voice over Wifi (VoWifi) networks have a substantial impact on call duration.

The new EVS (Enhanced Voice Services) codec has many features to improve robustness and conceal errors, yet the findings indicate that this may not be sufficient to deal with the adverse conditions in live LTE and Wifi networks.

This implies that the benefits of wideband and superwideband codecs, such as EVS, will only become evident once operators fix the transport quality of their networks. Indeed, the current marketing campaigns promoting EVS-based services are raising user expectations to a level that calls for disappointment. Customer satisfaction will only improve, when VoLTE and VoWifi service providers get their networks under control.

“Our customers make huge investments in VoLTE & VoWiFi to provide excellent voice service quality. But their end customers have many OTT options, such as Skype and Facetime, to make often excellent voice and video calls. Providing a constantly high user experience is the opportunity for mobile operators. However, this requires more than only a good voice codec – it needs an excellent network performance as well,” said Jan Bastian, Voipfuture’s CEO.

The study is based on data from more than 16 million international, domestic and mobile (VoLTE) live calls analyzed by Voipfuture’s Qrystal VoIP monitoring solution. The analysis was made possible by Connect, a new Qrystal solution component that correlates all available call data to create quality-enriched CDRs.
